So what should we call the now rump Kentucky democratic base?  The Licking River belt?

Terrible, unexpected results.

Probably partly a result of the terrible turnout (30-32%), which could also be a factor as to why polling sucked so massively in KY.

This election is got me behind the idea that mandatory voting wont be so bad.

Violates the first amendment. Not voting is a legitimate political position.

Of course when liberals dont like the outcome, they rely on force.

If turnout is the problem, It has to be on the Democrats to make their people go to the polls. They can't just rely on "oh, Matt Bevin is such a terrible candidate, we got this!". It seems like a really weak excuse for losing elections to me, and if you keep making that excuse, it'll keep happening.

I know this site's wet dream is a political world where poor, rural, Evangelical Whites make up all Republican votes and wealthy, educated, cosmopolitan post-grads (and of course the minorities they so graciously save) make up all Democratic votes, but that's simply not the case.  According to Wikipedia, that county is relatively poor and registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans by an almost 3:1 margin ... Not exactly a shocking results.  Shows how lame Conway is as a candidate that he didn't win more counties like this, in fact.

^ And its still Democratic-leaning county, by state standards. It voted for Grimes last year and even Obama in 2008.

I saw a tweet that said it was the most Democratic county of the 20th century. Dunno if it's true.

The tweet was about Knott County, not Rowan.

It'll probably look even worse for the Democrats after the 2016 Gubernatorial elections.

No, most of us actually want poor rural Whites to vote for us. It's you that seems to be bigoted against them.

In Kentucky most people don't go to University, don't need no degree to mine coal.

In America, we don't say "go to university".

What's up with the couple of south central KY counties having a Democratic (or only a slightly Repub swing)?

That's the most inflexibly Republican area of Kentucky so those areas really didn't have anywhere to swing since they already went full GOP, unlike much of the rest of the state.

^ The only county that swung to Conway was Cumberland, which cast 1,300 votes. Smaller counties are naturally more prone to wilder swings.

With the governor's mansion (and other statewide offices) under their control, state Republicans will aim all their resources at taking the Kentucky House next year.

Will they succeed?

Here's the current breakdown of the state legislature:

Senate:

Republicans: 27
Democrats: 11

House:

Republicans: 46
Democrats: 54

Another KY Democratic State Representative switches to the GOP. Democrats down to 50-46 in the chamber. If one more occurs the GOP has the chance to take the chamber in the special elections.

A lot of the Democrats are saying, "Good riddance." Gooch is a climate change denier.

May be. But without conservative Democrats like him these "progressives" doom their party to be in dire minority in Legislature in coming decades. We will see in Kentucky what we saw recently in West Virginia (and earlier - in Deep South+Arkanas+ Oklahoma+ ....)...
