Seems like a pretty cut-and-dry bill but I would be interested to hear from Senator Truman on what inspired him to introduce this.

As Barnes noted, this is a fairly straight-foward bill: it simply expands Section 8 of the CJ(R)A to include all federal officials, as opposed to just cabinet officers. The current text prohibits the impersonation of a cabinet officer but says nothing about other federal offices, meaning in effect that I could declare myself president tomorrow and there would be no way for anyone bring charges against me.

I discovered this hole a few weeks ago when Nagas was claiming to have been elected Pacific Senator. Hoping to forestall a drawn-out spamfest, I went digging through the CJ(R)A and found that there was no way to prosecute him (or anyone else) should he try to force his way into office. I'm not generally a lawsuit-happy kind of guy, but it makes little sense to have elections if anyone and everyone can seize power at will without suffering a penalty.

I agree with the reasoning provided by Senator Truman, and plan to vote for this bill.

I see nothing objectionable here.

I move for a final vote.

Yes, nothing against it.

If there aren't objections, I'll open a final vote tomorrow.

No objections here either. This was a change that frankly should have been added back in 2011 the last time this came up. I plan to be voting in favor.

This bill has enough votes to pass.
Senators have 24 hours to change or add their votes.
