Bush empowered Cheney. If Bush hadn't appointed him Defense Secretary, he probably wouldn't be Vice President.

Bush Sr. has a ton of skeletons in the closet. Are we supposed to believe that his offshore gulf drilling company Zapata had nothing to do with Operation Zapata (bay of pigs)? LOL.

Does anyone here realize that Bush Sr. is effectively trying to excuse his son by portraying him as a dimwitted stooge to his subordinates, i.e. pleading diminished capacity? I don't think "pathetic" even comes close to adequately describing this.

Well, I think it's fair to say that it would have been rather difficult to predict that Vice President Cheney's tenure would have ended up as it did, based off the actions of the Defense Secretary who cut defense spending, shrank the military, defended not overthrowing Saddam in the Gulf War, and sought UN support for multilateral intervention in Kuwait and Somalia. The only "Cheney-esque" thing that Cheney really did at Defense was to oversee the invasion of Panama.
