None of this is sudden.

    Yeah, this is an ongoing trend as we import more and more non-white workers, and as the "working class" regardless of race becomes smaller and smaller over time as the economy changes.  Biggest impact of course the 1965 immigration law changes which has lead to gradual de-Europeanization of the US (failure of "white privilege on that one perhaps?), and ongoing mechanization of work.

This probably has more to do with the increased proliferation of prescription opioids than anything else.

Most of it actually had to do with the rapid aging of the group on question during the 2000-2010 period.

White births rose rapidly from 1945 to 1957 then fell slowly for a few years before falling rapidly beginning around 1961. 

During the period of study, the 45-54 age group was born from 1946-1955 (so most of the people in the group were weighted on the 45-49 end)... and ended with the group born 1960-1970, with a significantly higher number of 50-54 year olds than 45-49 year olds.  Since 50-54 year olds naturally have a higher death rate, it would cause an increase in the overall group.

Once that was factored in, the trend was still there.. but much smaller.
