He actually was seen as a freedom fighter of sorts by Romanians and in the west in the late 60's and parts of the 1970's. He was a true Romanian nationalist and stocked nationalism within the Communist ideological boundaries. He was applauded as a type of 'good Communist' for opposing the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 as well.
