Richard Nixon had a universal healthcare plan of his own. Was it any good, and what would it be like today if it was enacted?

Yes, but the mandate was essentially reversed.

Pretty much.

Obamacare demands mandates on individuals, while Nixoncare demanded mandates on companies. It sucks that Ted Kennedy backed out of a potential deal, the country would be in much better shape today when it comes to healthcare.

Maybe, but as someone who's always gotten health insurance via employer/company, I'm not sold on the idea.

And so I did. It required companies to buy insurance for customers if they so choosed. No idea how that would be enforced

Buy insurance for customers?

Damn.  I wish Target had to buy my health insurance because I shop there.

Trying insurance to employment is ridiculous. Maybe it wasn't as ridiculous in 1972 but it certainly wouldn't work today, with half the people working for barely above the water small businesses and even the people who work for big companies, lots of job switching.

Basically this. It creates a lot of distortions in the labour market, driving up the cost of labour to for employers and tying workers to their jobs.

There was a good bit in one of the 2008 GOP post-mortem books (I think it was Ross Douthat's, but it might have been David Frum's), that noted that employer's labour cost per FTE drastically increased, while employee's real wages decline slightly during the 1990's/early 2000's, largely due to health care inflation.
