Well, the existence of any god is not a fact. You can believe that God's not dead, he's surely alive, he's living on the inside, roaring like a lion, but that doesn't make it a fact.

The real headline is Texas teacher forces student to be theologically sophisticated and express real faith.

If God just wandered down the street all day doing miracles every hour on the hour proving his existence and power that wouldn't be faith that would be scientific evidence proving a fact.  Faith is something you have when you don't have all the facts.

If these kids can't handle a high school in suburban Texas of all places they don't want to go to college.  Talk about your faith getting challenged and tested.

Great sources by the way.

Public schools are supposed to remain neutral on religious issues. Clearly, the teacher had irresponsible motivations, as there are MUCH better examples to use on an assignment.

Newsflash: the existence of God (or Yehva, Allah, spaghetti monster) hasn't been scientifically proven, hence it's not a fact.
I'm sorry it hurts your feelings but that's the simple truth.

Yes.  How dare a high school teacher prepare adolescents for the real world.  Shame on them.

Exceedingly sensationalistic reporting.

I'd agree that this is a terrible way to make the point, and I think that the Katy Independent School District now understands that.  (Imagine a world in which the people providing the curriculum materials actually read them before mandating them!)  According to the link you posted, "...the worksheet will not be used again in classrooms and that students did not get graded on that assignment."

Still, the headline is very misleading.

Literally telling a student "Deny god or you FAIL my class" is the exact opposite of neutrality.

You're confusing reality with the plot of "God is Not Dead."

The child was literally forced to renounce their entire faith in god at that moment. Viewing god's existence as fact, proven by the bible, is one of the centerpieces of christian faith.

That question is a poor example, but it's technically not wrong. Saying "There is no god" would also be an opinion rather than fact, since there isn't any concrete proof one way of the other about the existence of one or more god(s).

really it depends on what definition of "fact" is being used, though, doesn't it?

i don't see the problem here?

it's question of faith - if you're a person of strong faith and conviction in your belief, then you'd have no problem with denying that the existence of God is a fact. This is because, as a person of faith, whether or not you say God exists or not doesn't change his existence.

Yes, but Christians are commanded not to lie - saying that god doesn't exist is a lie.

to say that the existence of God is not a fact is not a lie - it cannot be proven, therefore it's not lying.

it's about whether you believe, not whether it's proven if He does or does not.

I can't help but wonder what the reaction among many of the defenders of this act had been if it had been a Hindu who had been given this choice with Shiva and made a case out of it, or how the reaction had been if this story was from Europe and the child were a Muslim.

Through I will also say that from what I read, it seem more a badly thought out execise than ill will toward religious people.
