Anyone who can separate conjoined twins can't be an idiot.

No more an "idiot" than most other American adults.  Take an American adult at random and put them in a presidential campaign, and they'll look at least as "idiotic" as Carson does.

Of course, most presidential candidates aren't plucked out of obscurity because they got in some good zingers at the National Prayer Breakfast.

Do you not know what "idiot savant" means? Did you even bother to click the link?

Have people noticed that there've been a sizable number of medical doctors in the Republican caucus who sound like extreme outliers (to be charitable) on some political issues? I'm thinking of Tom Coburn, Paul Broun, Scott DesJarlais...

Having seen actual "idiot savants", Carson's nothing like them.

No. He is a world-renowned brain surgeon at an elite hospital. I don't support his campaign but seeing the concerted effort by the media to warp his out of touch comments on policy and society as somehow reflecting upon his intellectual capacity is disgusting. And its probably why he is still up in the polls.

It's like pointing out that Hillary Clinton knew she'd likely be the Dem nominee for 2016 in 2009 and yet she still stupidly demanded a private email server which could clearly cause her problems. That must mean she has a low IQ. None of her other accomplishments matter.

It's absurd to think anyone who got into Yale is an idiot savant.

Clearly the man is good at several things.

An expression of the belief that he's an idiot savant suggests either staggering ignorance, or trolling.

I personally think that he's clearly not an idiot, but he's also clearly a terrible politician (a probable reason for his popularity right now).  He says a lot of things that are "out there," but I think a lot of politicians would if they weren't politically adept.  I'm sure Hillary and Bernie and O'Malley believe some really fringe stuff on a given issue that they don't say because they actually know what they are doing.  Well, I guess Sanders has said a fringe thing or two.

From the definition provided in the first post, an idiot savant is "a mentally defective person with an exceptional skill or talent in a special field, as a highly developed ability to play music or to solve complex mathematical problems mentally at great speed."

You don't get to Yale with just one talent.

No.

It would help, however. if he'd how just a wee bit of policy wonkishness.

A black man from Detroit who puts in the effort to get into Yale can get into Yale.

Note I say effort. Educational accomplishment is generally an award of effort not of intelligence. Effort can lead to intelligence, as you read more books than most other people, but it does not indicate it.
