Honestly though, "old style" is too broad as punk was always diverse with subgenres. There was the early 77 school of punk and most American 77 bands like The Ramones, Dead Boys, Dictators, Germs and Heartbreakers were apolitical wheras more British 77 bands were. 80s hardcore did tend to be more political and generally was left-wing with bands like the Dead Kennedys and Reagan Youth (Reagan Youth was probably the most explicitly left-wing band) You could argue that Minor Threat was the first SJW band. Aesthetically I still prefer the hedonism of 77 punk, there always was a certain puritanism to 80s hardcore and with bands like Agnostic Front (who admittedly were more right-wing) you get the feeling that it was the jocks entering punk in a sense.
Yes, Minor Threat and the later "Revolution Summer" of the DC hardcore scene kicked off the new school punk aesthetic and essentially what became my "scene".
