That would be my preference, but we shouldn't force it on them. I'd have a once-and-for-all two-choice referendum and be done with it.

Yeah, one or the other.  I'd welcome them as a state, but I wouldn't complain if they went independent and we kept our states number at a nice, even 50. Wink

Let the State of Puerto Rico into the union, as long as they approve it.

What differentiates the 'sovereign associated free state' option from independence?  Or more to the point, what is it?

Apparently independence is solidly opposed by the locals and really only promoted by a small group of radicals. Thus, statehood is the only fair and reasonable choice.

I think it's a simmilar situation to the free association compacts, like the ones the US has with the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia.
It would be independent, but the US would still serve one functions (defense,  funding some social services_ etc)

The vast majority don't want independence though. Maybe 50, 60, 70 years ago (Truman almost got shot for that cause if I recall), but not now.

At least a plurality want statehood, and honestly it would make it easier to help them deal with their financial problems, so that option is best.

Like a few others, I think they should join the US or become independent. If I were dictator, I'd pass a bill to hold a Puerto Rican referendum in 2020 with only two options: statehood or independence. Whichever gets more votes wins.

If the Republicans ditch the Nativism, they could very easily win over PR.

I say give them whatever they want, whether that's statehood, sovereignty, independence, or remaining a territory.  I definitely think there should be a referendum to choose between those options (in some form), and we could use that as a model for similar referendums in our other territories (Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, etc.)

Personally, I would probably support either sovereignty or independence.

Voted statehood, since I support a statehood vs. independence vote in all US territories, but Puerto Ricans in all likelihood would opt for statehood.

Apparently independence is solidly opposed by the locals and really only promoted by a small group of radicals. Thus, statehood is the only fair and reasonable choice.

"Radical" is a significant exaggeration, but yes, independence is not popular.

In Puerto Rican politics, only a small social democratic party favors independence. The Democratic Party affiliate supports commonwealth status and the Republican Party affiliate supports statehood. Of course, the roles are reversed in the states based on who is going to benefit the most electorally.

I'm not interested.  What's in the best interest of the U.S. is what I want and I'm not convinced statehood would in any way benefit the U.S.

Sounds cold but someone has to look at this logically and not emotionally.
