Both of these (particularly the first) were quite plausible.

Ford and Reagan in both so the GOP gets stuck having to deal everything bad about the 1977-1981 period, mwahahaha!

Jackson and Reagan.

As a Joe Everyman during the time period, I could never have voted for Ford in '76 unless the democrat was someone unbearable because of his pardon of Nixon.

(also note that I'm not factoring the known future of the late 70s; I consider that to be cheating IMO)

Ford in the first scenario, and very reluctantly Reagan in the second. In reality, I would have been heavily tempted to vote third party in both races.

Jackson. I would vote Eugene McCarthy if that was an option in case 2, but barring that, Wallace.

I would have picked Ford over Wallace too. But Ford isn't an option in scenario 2.
