How do Whites in South Africa tend to vote? Does the ANC get much support from them?

At this stage, there is no significant white vote for the ANC. Hash is our expert on SA politics though.

I got the impression that just about the whole spectrum of white South African politics, apart from the very far left and right, ended up in the Democratic Alliance. A few of the younger ex National Party politicians joined the ANC at one time but presumably they did not represent a large block of voters.

There seems to be one current white cabinet minister (Rob Davies, the Minister of Trade and Industry) who ,from his Wikipedia article, has a Communist as well as an ANC background. I presume that he does not enjoy substantial support in the South African white electorate.

There's also Derek Hanekom.

I'd say ANC does not enjoy much white support at all. A few percent at most, and the support they do get is probably from the english whites.

As earlier mentioned, the Democratic Alliance totally dominates the white voter base, and has done so at least since the 2004 election. The right wing VF+ is in a distant second place (among Afrikaners only). Probably the religious ACDP following after that.

The only places that differ are a few small towns in the Free State and Limpopo where VF+ enjoys fairly substantial support. They are even bigger than the DA in the town of Wesselbron. But this is to be considered a rare exception.

So VF+ is only backed by the Afrikaners? There is much English descendant support for it?

Slightly off topic, but do English descendants and Afrikaners live in the same general area usually? Are they included in whatever sort of "White state" that VF+ proposes?

VF+ is an Afrikaner party. Anglos usually have little to do with it, to the best of my knowledge.

Given that openly supporting white supremacy is not acceptable in South African politics today, the Volkstaat concept is not officially explicitly white, but it is explicitly Afrikaans-speaking. Coloured people are included, in other words, but anglophone whites are excluded.

Is it really unacceptable for an Afrikaner fringe party though? Or has the Overton Window shifted more than I thought?

The leader of the Freedom Front used to be a deputy minister, so they aren't that fringe.

Yeah, that's interesting. They are totally not treated as a pariah at all like similar parties in Europe would be. Both ANC and DA have worked in governing coalitions with them.

The VF+ has toned down the retoric over the years though. They no longer talk much about a volkstaat and instead portray themselves as a minority interest party. There was even an attempt to broaden there base. A few months ago they made a big fuss about a handful of coloured people that joined their party.

There is a new player in the game also. The relatively newly formed Front National (Front Nasionaal) was formed specifically to fight for "Afrikaner self-determination". From what I have seen, these guys seem very hardcore. Open apartheid apologists too. But they did very badly in the 2014 election.
