Do you think the US could have won or managed to maintain the independence of South Vietnam, with a Air and Navy commitment only. The idea would be to keep the land component strictly to advisers to the South Vietnamese, in order to avoid the devastating death toll that really shattered support for the war at home and sapped the morale of the troops. However, the US would go all in with overwhelming air support to give ground support to the South Vietnamese forces, and to bomb North Vietnam as well. The Navy could also maintain a large presence off the coast of South Vietnam in order to prevent smuggling of arms to the Vietcong, and to maintain a large carrier presence. Could this have worked out without the need for American land forces?
