Couldn't agree more. Of course the GOP is the party of ignorant hicks. However, these "ignorant hicks" have a vote, and characterizing them as such is ignorant in itself. The Dem coalition has plenty of ignorant factions and individuals as well.

Neither.  Both parties are run by monied elite, and the hicks (if there are such a people) are not running either party.  Both sides have their share of the ignorant.
