"If there is a rabid dog running around your neighborhood, you're probably not going to assume something good about that dog,” Carson, a front-runner in some opinion polls, said Thursday at a campaign event in Mobile, Alabama.

I literally have no words.

On this site, you'll sadly get a significant amount of people who agree completely with his assessment of Syrian refugees.

Among other things, Carson just isn't very good at nuance.

Ask Trump what talking like this is doing to him in the polls.

Reuters is not good at nuance.  Carson is not good at saying things that won't make him look awful taken out of context.
NBC has the full quote.

the rabid dogs in this analogy are clearly the terrorists, not refugees in general.

Muslims are the dogs in this analogy... or maybe Syrians in general regardless of religion are the dogs.

If that's the case, why isn't Carson calling for allowing in any Syrian refugees who pass the current checks?

We love dogs as long as they are not rapid. In context, Carson was clearly not putting down the refugees as a group. He was positing that the vetting to week out the chaff from the wheat should be most rigorous.

Carson is a mess, in my opinion, but this particular bullet against him is shooting blanks, and the press characterization of it, including CNN, which had the spin that Carson was saying the refugees are "rapid dogs," and that's it without further characterization (although to their credit they did show the entire clip which clearly impeached their characterization), is most unfair and wrong.

You and Ben Carson should watch more movies.  It's pretty well known calling someone a dog in Arabic is an insult.

Is this whole issue somewhat of a red herring, anyway? Since we already have at least 10 million "illegal" aliens in the US. Certainly a tiny % of the Syrian Refugees could be ISIL/Daesh,
but don't you think that there are already Daesh supporters here?

Yes, and many of them are likely U.S. Citizens who were born in the country or moved here as young children. Even racial/ethnic profiling will only help to a limited degree, as many ISIS/Daesh foreign fighters are converts.

because like most people in this country he doesn't realize that we already have an extensive, elaborate and inefficient vetting process for refugees.

He should turn it into an ad that would ensure his being seen as Reagan's torch bearer. There's a dog in your neighborhood. Some people say the dog is tame. Others say it's rabid and dangerous. Since no one can really be sure who's right, isn't it smart to keep the dog in the kennel?

I stand by my theory that he is now trying to sink his own campaign non-destructively.

Sounds reasonable, but but for what reason?

Because he's stuck in a Catch-22. I think he originally ran for the free PR and probably expected to be dropping out either now (if he did poorly) or after Iowa (if he did well). But then all his competition turned out to be horrible clowns, so awful at running for president  that Trump is at #1 and he's at #2.

He's stuck, because if he stays in, everyone is going to pile on, and do their best to destroy him utterly, which will leave his cushy second career and personal reputation  in tatters. But if he drops out now, while so high in the polls, that will be abandoning his supporters, which many of them will never forgive.

So, Carson needs to sink in the polls slowly but surely, so that he can then gracefully exit and go back to giving speeches, writing books, and making money. But his rivals are so bad that he can't sink himself no matter how much he tries.
