Probably have to be someone gay, since nominating white men is evil systemic privilege.
I guess I forgot that gays can't be white men.

What do you mean?

He said that it would have to be "someone gay", and "nominating white men is [an] evil systemic privilege. Seeming to imply that gays cannot be white men, which is pretty ludicrous.

Probably the more important question is when the USA will have second after JFK president (although its hard to call Kennedy decent follower) who will be Catholic? I guess that will be some Democratic candidate so I guess this question is not that offtopic.

I really think it will end up being Seth Moulton in 2028 or 2032.  As for the 2nd Catholic president, I'm seriously thinking this year, with Rubio or Kasich or in 2020 with Ryan, Sandoval or Martinez.  If Trump gets the nomination and loses, there will be big pressure on the GOP to nominate a Latino next time.

Honestly, I don't get why people keep thinking Seth Moulton will be president by the 2030s.

Martin Heinrich in 2020. If Clinton wins, somewhere down line Joe Kennedy.

I think we're beyond the point of identity politics at least as it comes to Catholic vs. Protestant.

No idea. It probably won't happen until 2037 at the earliest, maybe 2041.

2017-2025: Clinton
2025-2033: Clinton's VP, perhaps Castro

So we'll have an interrupted 24 years of Democratic rule?

Right....

Put in another pitch for Seth Moulton, assuming he gets a Senate seat soon enough.

Feingold could make a run at it in the next 4-8 years if he wins his senate seat back.

Cuomo's in there too, but damn would I have a hard time accepting him as nominee.

Beyond 2030 or so... whiteness is a social construct so who the heck knows what current ethnicities we may or may not accept as 'white' by then.

There are plenty of prominent Catholic Republicans. See Kelly Ayotte, Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan. It's entirely possible the second Catholic President will be Republican.

That's not really an important or often discussed topic because as someone noted Catholic/Protestant identity politics don't really exist in the US anymore. This wouldn't be an issue.

And based on demographics it'd be just as likely to be a Republican as a Democrat.

Moulton is only 37. I think it would actually be better for him to serve a few terms in congress and then serve a term or two in Markey's seat once he retires.

Serving in office a long time doesn't seem to help presidential contenders.

W was Governor for 6 years.
Obama was Senator for four.

With the buzz for Warren as Hillary's running mate, Moulton would be well-positioned to be Senator when the special election comes along. He wouldn't need to risk his congressional seat for it.

And he presumably wouldn't be able to run for President for another 8 years anyway.

I certainly assumed as much, but then it turned into perhaps the most significant divide on Trump vs. Not Trump support in the cultural North.  I have no idea what this means going forward, but it does look like there's some serious Catholic/non-religious coasts vs. Protestant interior identity politics within the GOP now.

All that's showing is that fundamentalist Protestants tended to support Cruz. But even that's not true identity politics, seeing as how these same people supported Rick Santorum four years ago and many supported Marco Rubio before his campaign collapsed.

Gov-elect Joe Kennedy III and I hope he challenges Baker in 2018. If not it would be Gov-elect Galvin Newsom who will be Cali Gov.
