Probably the more important question is when the USA will have second after JFK president (although its hard to call Kennedy decent follower) who will be Catholic? I guess that will be some Democratic candidate so I guess this question is not that offtopic.

That's not really an important or often discussed topic because as someone noted Catholic/Protestant identity politics don't really exist in the US anymore. This wouldn't be an issue.

And based on demographics it'd be just as likely to be a Republican as a Democrat.

That's not really an important or often discussed topic because as someone noted Catholic/Protestant identity politics don't really exist in the US anymore. This wouldn't be an issue.

I certainly assumed as much, but then it turned into perhaps the most significant divide on Trump vs. Not Trump support in the cultural North.  I have no idea what this means going forward, but it does look like there's some serious Catholic/non-religious coasts vs. Protestant interior identity politics within the GOP now.

All that's showing is that fundamentalist Protestants tended to support Cruz. But even that's not true identity politics, seeing as how these same people supported Rick Santorum four years ago and many supported Marco Rubio before his campaign collapsed.
