Teacher tenure provides "just cause" employment protections for educational professionals. Currently, tenure is awarded based on the number of years a teacher has been on staff. There are some alternative proposals that award tenure on the basis of different performance metrics.

Further, where do you stand on the issue of tenure as a whole?

It typically takes 2-3 years for just cause to apply, or to get tenured, which is an abnormally long time for a workforce that is union. Most trial periods or grace periods or can-be-fired-at-any-time-for-any-reason periods are significantly less than that.

It should be 1 year when you consider that teachers are basically required these days to get Masters degrees. They have the education of an attorney but are paid like a civil service post. The first 5-10 years teachers are used and abused by being assigned problems students, lots of classes, crappy schedules, and get asked to do extra curriculars. Give them their just cause.

I agree with this in theory, but establishing this in practice is more difficult. Currently, evaluations of teacher performance is based mainly on standardized test scores, which is an extremely flawed system to say the least.

The fact that you see it as simple as that shows you know nothing about the teaching system.

Horrible, it is one reason among many why the current school system is in shambles.

The left in this country makes the mistake of thinking that teachers unions advocate for better education policies. This is absolutely not true. This is not how unions work. Teachers unions advocate for more pay and less work regardless of individual performance. As do all unions. No one thinks that a union of janitors particularly cares that toilets are clean, the work is just a means to the end of getting paid. That's not to say that teachers unions or janitors unions are bad. They serve an important purpose but that purpose is in the interest of their union members and not in the interests of management, the government, customers, students, etc. As such, we cannot let them wholesale dictate policy. We need to realize this.
