Just in case anyone wanted to draft one of the best-known SSM opponents:

Wow. I wasn't expecting this. This changes everything. He probably would have brutally taken Pataki down in the polls.

The thought of him ever running for President never once crossed my mind. Ever.

Considering he was the deciding vote in saving the ACA individual mandate provision, he'd never get the nomination.

Considering this came up in a discussion of Charles Evans Hughes, the Supreme Court Justice and future Chief Justice who ran for President in 1916 against Wilson, it's hardly surprising the topic came up and was then quickly dismissed by Roberts.  As Roberts himself noted, the Court has changed a lot since Hughes on the Court, with all the members now former appellate judges and having never held elected office whereas when Hughes resigned to run for President, he was one of four Justices with prior elected experience.  Indeed, it's been over sixty years since any appointment to the Court was of someone who had held an elected office when Earl Warren was appointed Chief Justice.

It can be argued that a swingish Supreme Court Justice, especially a Chief Justice, is more powerful nowadays than a President.

I thought it was pretty obvious that he wasn't going to run for President? Did anyone actually want him to run?

No.  As mentioned already in this thread, the topic came up during a discussion of Charles Evans Hughes, the Supreme Court Justice who ran against Wilson in 1916. During it, Roberts mentioned in passing he had no plans to emulate his predecessor.

PV would be a lot closer than that with that map, barring a bunch of odd democratic swings throughout the country.

I actually think Supreme Court Justices have more power than Presidents if they stick around long enough.  Presidents have ultimate power but only for 4-8 years.  A Supreme Court Justice could shape law for 25 years.  But you have to accept the life of a cloistered academic, which is not for everyone.
