Anyone else think this mindset and the absurd "conventional wisdom" is why the Republican establishment is so screwed?

I seriously doubt anyone outside of Trump tower was seriously discussing a Trump presidential campaign (let alone the ramifications of it) prior to 2015 (excepting that brief news cycle in April 2011.)

Of course, it is almost certain that even without Trump, Bush would still be languishing.

Agree and disagree. Trump definitely wouldn't even have been a talking point, but Trump was the deciding factor in Bush's fall. Bush may still be leading if Trump never entered the race at all.

Bush was stumbling out of the gate. His waffling on Iraq took place in May, before most people thought Trump would pull the trigger, and Bush's abysmal first debate/forum performances happened while Trump was still preoccupied trolling Lindsey Graham and John McCain. Trump merely expedited the necrosis.
