A little over a week ago, Cruz was just barely pushing 10% now all of a sudden he shoots up in a weeks span to 23% a net gain of 13% in just 7 days time, what is causing this suddenly change from Carson to Cruz cause it seems like 90% of Cruz's gain is coming from Carson.

That's what they said about Trump but somehow he's still in first. I doubt Carson will fall for long.

Carson is not Trump, Trump has appeal to both the centrists and the conservative wings of the party,
Carson's appeal is only the the uber religious crowd and the far right

Ben Carson has appeal to libertarians and moderates. Especially libertarians since he's the only other candidate (besides Rand Paul) who opposes the Patriot Act and the NSA. I would be happy with Rand Pau, Carson, and then, taking  dive to the center, Chris Christie or carly florina for a different set of reasons

LOL that is not true, I have yet to meet a single libertarian IRL or on forums that is Pro-Carson, most I know are either avoiding this election entirely or are supporting Rand or Cruz.

Are you sure they weren't libertarian-conservatives essentially conservatives with a slight libertarian flavor to them?

Part of Carson's appeal is that he's an intelligent deeply religious man. When voters realize that intellect isn't the same as knowledge, it makes sense to shift to Cruz, a guy with similar appeal, the advantages of some positive news stories, and a deeper understanding of policy.

Carson's attempt to bring his own campaign down smoothly so that he can gracefully exit is finally working.

Why has no one posted the obvious explanation? TRUMP DESTROYED HIM! Just like he did to Bush. He flat out called him a liar beyond any possible refutation and made him no longer viable as a candidate

Carson's support, unlike Trump's, has always been very 'soft'.  Carson has been getting negative coverage on several different areas, while Cruz has been given a lot of good coverage about him being a real contender.

I am a libertarian-liberal and I support Carson, but I support Trump first. Carson's base:

1) Evangelicals
2) Moderates (including libertarians)
3) Older blacks

He is probably losing a chunk of his evangelical base due to negative press, poor performance on foreign policy issues and Trump's attack.

If it hasn't become obvious enough through this election and past election seasons, Iowa voters will bandwagon to the most tolerable conservative candidate. For this reason, we can easily see Santorum or Huckabee rise to power in Iowa if Cruz has a major gaffe.

Inability to answer basic questions, very strong operation by Cruz, Trump's complete annihilation of Carson, and Carson's own fairly weak operation in Iowa are probably all good explanations.

Libertarians definitely aren't supportive of ben carson. He's committed enough no nos like being open to a muslim database like trump, supportive of troops on the ground, supportive of ENHANCING the war on drugs, pro federal reserve. That just doesn't cut it for libertarians. Cruz would be the natural 2ND choice.

They're turning to cruz so quickly because they feel cruz is far more trustworthy on national security issues than ben carson since carson doesn't seem to know what he's talking about with foreign policy.

You are not a libertarian if you support Donald Trump. I am a conservative-libertarian hybrid myself. Libertarians don't support forcing widows from their homes to build a casino, corporate welfare, economic "stimulus", government-run health care, and trade regulation.

His demonstrated lack of knowledge in foreign policy, in a point where foreign policy is the biggest talking point.
