What are your thoughts. I'm going with #2. The Bolero was the first distortion type technique that I know of.

I don't know, don't play, don't really understand what makes one better than another.

But I do know that Pete Townshend can write the hell out of a song and we have the same birthday, so he gets my vote.

Dave Murray and Adrian Smith are the best tandem players in rock, for sure.  Both can really lay down a lick.

Clapton.  As far as criminally underrated because it's not as "cool" or "edgy" to praise him, Richie Sambora can just straight up play.

other.  There are many good guitarists, including all those named in the poll.  Hard to name just one superlative.  For filthy solos, I like Angus Young.  For creativity, I like Les Paul.  For most influential, I'm torn between Hendrix, Billy Gibbons, and BB King.  For just good playing all the way through, I like Joe Satriani, Dimebag Darrell, Blackmore, Van Halen, and Alex Lifeson.

Joe Satriani is probably my favorite overall, although that may not be the same as "best."

Hendrix was definnitely the greatest innovator of the instrument , and at the same time one of the greatest technical players (in terms of raw musicality rather than notes per minute). He redefined the electric guitar.

Eddie van Halen is second as he likewise tokking playing to a new level. Finger tapping and whammy bars were used before 1977, but EVHmade them tasteful, musical, and even integral for a couple decades.

Chuck Berry basically synthesized electric juke blues into his style,  but did it in a way that basically invented rock and roll lead guitar.

Most overated: arguably Clapton, and i say that as someone who was his devotee throughout school.
