Supposing that Republican Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee had challenged and somehow successfully defeated President George W. Bush in the 2004 Republican Primary, how would he have fared in the general election against Democratic nominee John Kerry? Please discuss with maps.

Kerry wins, but the map is crazy.

Kerry would win with Chafee coming in a distant third to a Socially conservative reform party candidate who takes most of the red states. Chafee mainly gets the vote of rich republicans in blue states.

Chafee is more liberal on social issues and the Iraq war, so they're not going to vote for him.

328: Sen. Lincoln Chafee(R-RI)/Mayor Michael Bloomberg(R-NY) - 49.6%
210: Sen. John Kerry(D-MA)/Rep. Harold Ford, Jr.(D-TE)  - 46.3%

High libertarian voter turnout, and the base is rallied by a keynote speech from Representative Ron Paul and a longer than usual speech by Governor Huckabee which helped the Religious Right vote.

Senator John Kerry/Governor Ed Rendell 278 Electoral Votes 40.1%
Senator Lincoln Chafee/Rep. Ron Paul 239 Electoral Votes 39.1%
Activist Pat Buchanan/Fmr. Rep Jack Edwards 21 Electoral Votes 18.5%

Several states are close, such as Minnesota and New Hampshire being decided by a couple thousand votes. Pat Buchanan is endorsed by Mike Huckabee, Jeff Sessions, and a few other Southern politicians.
