The 22nd Amendment never passed... On March 15th, 1987, President Ronald Reagan announced his intention to run for a third term in the 1988 Election. If he wins re-election, he'll be 81 before he decides to run again or not... It was an interesting race. President Reagan won the primary almost unopposed, only running against perennial candidate and former Governor of Minnesota Harold Stassen. Stassen only won four percent of the vote in the primaries, mainly due to protests about a third term. Vice President Bush declined to run for another term as Vice President. President Reagan chose Bob Dole as his running mate, although he wanted Kemp, he didn't want to anger his base. Senator Gary Hart won the democratic nomination in a close primary. He chose Joe Biden as his running mate. In the end, Reagan crushed Hart...

President Ronald Reagan/Senator Bob Dole 400 Electoral Votes 53.1%
Senator Gary Hart/Senator Joe Biden 138 Electoral Votes 45.7%

The world is entering into full freedom, good. Good always wins over evil, I wish the world the best to guide us through these times. Peace is finally here. All the times I've been in Germany... people want freedom... They died and sacrificed for it. They wanted to go here which really warms my heart, anyone's. Interesting.. wonder how the recession is going to affect the Republicans now!

Did Eisenhower or Nixon try to run for third terms or just Reagan?

Thanks, and true! And just Reagan, Nixon was originally going to but didn't, Watergate, etc still happens because no one dared run for a third term. Reagan did though.

CNN Broadcaster: Hello viewers from around the world, nation, and people of New Hampshire. Today is primary night and the night is a cold one in New Hampshire tonight, on the democratic side, Bill Bradley has enjoyed a last minute surge against Joe Biden and now they're dead even in the polls. In the republican realm, Pete DuPont and Vice President Dole are duking it out, with Senator John McCain close enough for a comeback?

CNN Broadcaster: The New Hampshire Republican Primary has just been called for Pete DuPont, former Governor of Delaware and rising star in the GOP. He has been endorsed by many legislators, and even Former President Ford, who Dole once ran under as Ford's running mate. We have breaking press conferences from Pete DuPont's and John McCain's headquarters. Dole will make a scheduled speech tomorrow morning.

Du Pont in his victory speech out of Keene, New Hampshire

"Hello New Hampshire! Thank you, Thank you so much! You have started a tidal wave of compassionate conservatism! Let's take our message all the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! Thank you all, God bless!"

CNN Broadcaster: That was from Governor DuPont's headquarters. He had to shorten the speech because members of the audience kept cheering. Ya know, this guy may be the "New Reagan". That's the sense I'm getting from him and it's uhh pretty strong. Oh wait, here comes Senator McCain.

"Hello New Hampshire! It's great to be here... Now over the past several months, I've enjoyed talking to the people of this country. It's been truly amazing and just I cannot thank everyone enough who's supported me and volunteered. It was a fun experience, but now the people have decided and it is for Pete DuPont. I am dropping out of the race and supporting the next president of the United States, PETE DUPONT!!! Thank you all, God Bless!"

CNN Broadcaster: Oh, just after Senator McCain's announcement we have uhh some important news on the Democratic Primary in the granite State. Let us go to Maine and South Dakota and everywhere! Let's get our values to the White House! Thank you all and God Bless!"

On February 19th, 1992...

Bill Clinton dropping out of the race

"I'd like to thank everyone for being here. It's been a pleasure running for prsident over the past few months but America wants change. Something new. Why does the actual third term of Ron Reagan comprise only a few paragraphs--in many ways smaller than the space taken up by photos in this? Your audience might be genuinely curious as to how Reagan would differ from Bush, and whether or not he would make up for the sins of the past and actually handle the deficit.

Eyy, 1992-93 will be very interesting hint hint, and this tl isnt originally going to be about his third term, it's more how it affects the politics and the future. The winner of 1992 will be a very... well after the '92 election, it'll be a few updates till '96.

April Fools

In early April it was make or break for every campaign... Every campaign poured everything they got into winning the early April states to try to determine a nominee for each party. Vice President Dole decided to take a gamble. He wouldn't spend money in the states he was polling strongly in, instead the ones in which he was behind or at risk of losing.. This would come to cost him greatly... On the democratic side, Joe Biden was focusing on many states. The April 7th states. If he swept the North, the race would be over, knocking Bill Bradley, his most serious competition out of the race, leaving Brown and Gore, who'd likely drop out soon regardless of his performance in April...

Al Gore drops out on April 7th, 1992 in Nashville, Tennessee

"Now look, a few months ago, just before New Hampshire almost no one believed in us. Not even some of our staff did, which is why many quit. I looked to keep America great. President Reagan has been successful in leading our nation te last twelve years. He's restored it to prosperity and kept the peace. I'm sure Bob Dole will do just that when he is president. I encourage all of my supporters to oppose Joe Biden, someone who even can't serve Delaware's best interests. So because of that, and also to avoid a fractured republican party... I am endorsing Vice President Dole for the presidency and dropping out immediately. I won't be dead on the political scene. Expect to see me soon.. *winks* Thank you everyone, God bless you all and this great country."

Eugene McCarthy announcing his presidential run in Minneapolis, Minnesota

"Now... it was never my intention to do this... but sadly I must do it. America is on the wrong track. Twelve years of Reagan has harmed our economy, our standing in the world, and many other disgraces. I am giving my reasons for what I am about to announce.. Both political parties are corrupt, hate to break it to ya. Senator Joe Biden, a false progressive, and Vice President Dole, a foolish conservative. I am the bridge in the middle. The sane choice in November, who will work for America once I'm elected. I may be old, but I'm experienced. I announce my intention to enter the 1992 Presidential race on the "McCarthy for America" Party ticket. God Bless us in this great endeavour."

It's the only one of those McCarthy could become a major candidate(15-25%) with. Maybe Ivanka Trump, but anyone else is too low in name recognition and spectrum-wide appeal.

"Hello Democrats, Americans, everyone. Today marks a new era in American History. We will win in November... We must, for the American people. President Reagan, and his right hand man, Bob Dole have wrecked our economy. Eugene McCarthy, a man i used to admire when I was growing up, is a false liberal. He is on this for pure politics, and so is Dole! As governor of California, we came in at a rough patch and made it better, we were re-elcted by the biggest margin in California history. The people liked us. We got them results, jobs, everything. That is the experience needed to restore America. Joe and I, we have the experience needed to change America for the better. I humbly and thankfully accept your nomination for Vice President of the United States! Thank you! Thank you! Let's take this campaign to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!"

I promise, that when I am elected president. I shall be the champion of the middle class and restore our economy and nation! I humbly and thankfully accept your nomination for president of the United States! Let's take our country back!  Let's take this campaign to the White House! Thank you all and God bless you!"

August 23rd, 1992-

President Reagan introduces tax cuts that are shot down by the Senate.
Reagan approval at 48%.

August 29th, 1992-

DOW plunges 300 points.

After a little bit of campaigning.... it was debate time. In the first debate, it was Biden versus Dole. Biden and Dole duked it out to the end, but in the end, Biden crushed Dole, portaying himself as a unifier, not a divider. Dole portrayed himself as more experienced and tied himself to President Reagan many times when Biden went on the attack. Eugene McCarthy was not allowed into the first, second, or third debates. In the town hall debate, Biden connected with voters while Dole didn't really do a good job at it. In the third and final debate, Biden again defeated Dole, but this time narrowly. In the vice presidential debate, which was also heavily watched, Jerry Brown and Phil Gramm tied. Jerry Brown cited his experience, as did Gramm. Mainly, they were defending their higher ups, the nominees, and the economy. The Unity Party was not invited to any debates. This caused some public outcry, but it wouldn't make a difference....

1992 Election Coverage:

6:59 PM:

"Welcome to CNN's coverage of Election '92. I'm      and in just one minute, the first states will close and we may be able to make a projection. Oh, here it comes. Kentucky is as of right now too close to call, Biden and Dole were exchanging the lead several times over the past week here and all of the polls were in the margin of error, let's see if McCarthy may take away some votes as well, though it's unlikely he'll win the state. Also, in the great stat of Indiana we can now project a Bob Dole win, ahead of Biden by around ten points. In South Carolina, we can project the inner is Vice President Dole. Georgia is too close to call, same with Florida and Virginia. Vermont goes for Senator Joe Biden, his first victory tonight.

"It is now 7:30 and a few more states's polls are closing. Let's see the results, shall we? We have one projection, In the state of West Virginia, Biden wins narrowly. The Vice President wins North Carolina, now it seems Dole is far ahead in the lead but surely, this lead will get tighter or maybe even drop by the end of the night. Also, oh it seems the Vice President has carried Virginia."

"It is now 8 o'clock on the Eastern Seaboard, many states are closing! We have several projections to make! Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, his home state of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Washington D.C all go for Senator Biden. However we also have victories for the vice president. Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, oh and Georgia too, all go for the Vice President!  Missouri, Pennsylvania, Maine and it's congressional districts, are too close or too early to call."

8:30:

"It's now 8:30 on the Eastern Seaboard, we have a couple projections to make. Pennsylvania for Biden. That's big. Maine's first congressional district narrowly goes for Unity Party candidate Eugene McCarthy. That's his first electoral vote, just one, two seventy needed to win the White House. Arkansas is too close to call, Kentucky also goes for Dole by around three points."

9:00:

"It's nine o' clock in the east, and we have many polls closing! New York goes for Biden, a huge state. it goes for Biden by a good margin, good news for him. We are also able to call Minnesota, a safe democratic state for Biden but McCarthy is in second and gaining votes. Still for Biden though, same with Wisconsin and we are now calling oh, Missouri for Biden! It's by around a point but still big! For Vice President Dole, Texas, Kansas, his home state, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and all of it's congressional districts, Colorado, Wyoming, and Arizona. New Mexico is too close to call, with a slight Biden lead. The current electoral vote tally is 191 for Biden, 180 for Dole, and one for McCarthy.

10:00:

"A few projections. Iowa is too close to call, with a slight Dole lead. Utah goes for Vice President Dole. Montana is too close to call with a slight Biden lead, same with Nevada. This is going to be a close election indeed... Oh wait, Maine and it's second congressional district go or Biden very narrowly, McCarthy pulled off a strong second here."

11:00:

"Important news. We have a very important projection. California, Oregon, and Washington all go for Biden, Idaho for Dole. putting Biden at 266 electoral votes. The Dole camp can still pull this off if they win all remaining states very narrowly but likely losing the popular vote. Oh... Ok, Florida for Dole. This is getting interesting. Hawaii is too early to call."

11:23:

"We have a historic projection. Hawaii goes for Biden, as does Iowa and Arkansas. This puts Biden above the 270 threshold needed to win the presidency. Senator Joe Biden is the president-elect of the United States."

Joe Biden, the president-elect of the United States.

"Thank you! Thank you America! tonight we proved that the American people wanted change. I thank you all for believing in me and I promise you. When I am president. I will be the people's president. Me and Jerry are here for the little guy. Bob and Gene ran great campaigns, I wish them the best in their futures. Let's unify this country and move it forward together. Let's make America great again!

The soon to be former Vice President of the United States, Bob Dole.

"Thank you! We may not have won, but we fought for our values. That's all that matters and I wish President-Elect Biden the best. I'll try to work alongside him the best I can when he is president, offering him advice, excreta. I'm going back home, Phil will go back to the Senate, I know he'll do great work. I pray for Joe. Thank you!"

Many hours later, Biden carried all the remaining states except for Alaska. This was a democratic landslide, the people voted for change.

The Results

Senator Joe Biden/Former Governor Jerry Brown Sad 320 Electoral Votes 48.9%
Vice President Bob Dole/Senator Phil Gramm Sad 217 Electoral Votes 44.3%
