1972. President Nixon runs for His second term. Governor of Alabama George Wallace wins Democratic Primaries (during which He doesn't suffer the attack).
Most Liberal members of Democrats are not happy for the Wallace victory, but thay decide to support him. George McGovern refuse to run as Independent and supports, unhappily, Wallace.
The only Democrat that decide to run as Independent for President is black representative Shirley Chisholm from New York.

What if? Discuss with maps.

The South would basically become a race between Chisholm and Wallace.

Nixon's high popularity with Southerners neutralizes Wallace. He does keep Nixon under five hundred though, so I suppose he would still have been a better nominee than McGovern.

Richard Nixon has a high lead on Wallace except for the South until Chisholm announces her candidacy in July. She immediately does well in the North and Wallace starts leading in a couple more states. Many democrats criticize Chisholm for running but she doesn't care. Nixon/Agnew vs Wallace/Carter vs Chisholm/McCarthy.

Nixon/Agnew: 49.1%
Wallace/McCarthy: 39.4%
Chisholm/McCarthy: 10.1%

Nixon gets 48 states...except for Alabama and Mississippi, Chisholm takes DC

The Southern Strategy and the huge wing split in the Democratic Party does enough to put Nixon over the top...if CREEP doesn't overkill it.
