I think it is sensible to assume that many of the people that voted for the Nazis were much more moderate than the party itself (as is commonly the case, even for much more politically correct parties). The Nazis had to put in quite a lot of effort to make people accept the most violent parts of their anti-Semitism (see for example

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristallnacht#From_the_Germans). However, obviously, people were not willing to (or dared to) do anything to stop the actual violence.
I think this is a very important lesson for today. It does not help if most people do not support extreme policies as such, it is enough if they vote for a party whose leadership does.
