Of course all this is pie in the sky stuff. What I asked was what if the tunnel actually existed what sort of effect would it have where the UK would effectivley be as close to NYC as upstate NY ?

Well unless you really hate flying you can get there that quick now.

It takes 7 to 8 hours to get from NYC to upstate NY ?!?

It's an 8 hour drive to get from where I live to Buffalo, yes.

What's the distance ?

Mapquest driving directions from NY, NY to Buffalo, NY.

Total Est. Time: 6 hours, 22 minutes Total Est. Distance: 395.79 miles

Another problem with a tunnel from the U.S. to Britain - what side of the road would people drive on? Wink

I love the idea, but I'm a sucker for such things (space elevator also).  I loved the show Extreme Engineering, but it hasn't had any new episodes has it?  Bering St. Bridge also!

Well, we've already pointed out that the tunnel would be pretty much impossible, but if it were can you imagine how big a terrorist target it would be, or the catastrophe such an attack would cause?

Blow the middle up and watch the water rush in collapsing the tunnel as it moved through it. I'd pay big money to watch something that massive collapse.

I could see a minor advantage; I have limited sitting tolerance.  I could be able to go to Europe using this system.

Now, if somebody else wants to fork over the $12 Trillion so that I can have dinner in Paris and dessert in NYC, be my guest.  :-)

I read about the plan years ago. Amazing but not impossible.
