Bush Condemns S. Korea Stem Cell Advances
Saturday, May 21, 2005 4:15 PM EDT
The Associated Press
By DEB RIECHMANN

President Bush has condemned stem cell research advances in South Korea and said he worried about living in a world in which human cloning was condoned. He said he would veto any legislation aimed at loosening limits on federal support in the United States.

"I'm very concerned about cloning," Bush told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday. "I worry about a world in which cloning becomes acceptable."

"I made it very clear to the Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayers' money to promote science which destroys life in order to save life is _ I'm against that. And therefore, if the bill does that, I will veto it."

Sounds to me like he didn't condemn the stem cell advances. He condemned the destroying of human embryos.

And you're a Libertarian, so you should oppose stem cell funding anyway.

To me this is a mixed kettle of fish. As you say I do oppose federal funding of all research. The pharmaceutical companies should use their own money. They have plenty of it.
On the other hand Bush's negative attitude toward a field of research, which could potentially provide cures to many diseases, is disturbing.

If Bush was stuck in a wheelchair like Christopher Reeves was it might change his attitude.

To be honest, I'm more concerned about eugenics than cloning.  Clones (genetically identical individuals) already occur in nature - we call them identical twins.

Actually messing with the genome though, that's a much messier can of worms.

So would you support outlawing generic gene editing?

I have no problem with theraputic cloning, where some of your own cells are taken to regrow an organ or damaged nerve cells.

I do worry about genetic "enhancements" as well.

We know very well who Bush is.
What can we expect from this man?

Of course if it was October 2004 he would praise the advances. The man would do anything to get re-elected or help himself in politics. Its only now that he doesn't have to worry about it.

Because, as we all know, most politicians never do anything to get re-elected.

BTW, he opposed embryonic stem cell research during the campaign too, so you're wrong.

The fact that Christopher Reeves didn't give a flip about the handicapped before he was himself doesn't improve my opinion of him much anyway...

Bush is a Luddite.  All religious are a danger to science and reason.

Personally I would grind up embryos and drink them in shakes if it would extend my life or improve health.

That is the most disturbing thing I have ever seen on this forum.

Did you know that the term has been extended to other uses since that time?

tf, no one's saying they hate the guy, its just hard to take his personal motives seriously if he didn't care about the handicapped until he was one.

Sure, it was great of him to pursue reform - much better than just sitting still on the issue (no pun intended); I just don't think he deserved his idolatry status.

Dude, you realize everything he has done comes solely from the fact that he is a celebrity right? All celebrities have idolatry status. But he has idolatry status on that site alright--idolatry of hatred.

Why would anyone object to Christopher Reeves or anyone else being selfish?  All human beings are completely and utterly selfish.

You can tell the liars by the ones who deny this.

So he was just as famous and beloved before his accident?

And there's some major word-play getting done here...

Also, OK, so we all know everyone's selfish...I'm trying to see what part of Reeves's selfishness deserved worldwide praise.

No, he's a celebrity with a personal drama. Was O.J. just a famous before 1995?
