Self-explanatory. Which elderly politicians were defeated or regret retiring, but would totally stage a comeback i age permitted? Lugar and Edwin Edwards would definitely do so. Trent Lott is also a very strong possibility.

Evan Bayh isn't elderly, but I don't think we've seen the last of him.

He seems rather content making infrequent appearances on FOX as one of their token Democrats.

This. Open senate seat and a weak incumbent at Governor in Indiana this cycle, Bayh didn't jump. He's most likely done with elected office.

The money's too good (he's also a professional corporate board member) and it still is too early after he randomly bailed on the Senate seat at literally the last minute to make a solid run. If he does come back at all, he'll probably run in 2020.

Bob Bennett here in Utah would probably run again against Mike Lee (who defeated him in 2010) if he was younger.

Jerry Brown would probably be running for president (and winning) right now if he were ten years younger.

He's even said so himself.

Howard Dean and Jerry Brown come to mind. John Edwards too if Elizabeth lived to forgive him publicly.

John McCain's still in office, but he might have tried to run again if he was 20 years younger.

He's 67.  I don't think that's quite "too old" to return to office in the near future.

It is though. I can't see him running for Governor, and there is unlikely to be any open seats for Congress soon (not that he wants to be in Congress anyway). His main option is running for President, and he'll be 72 in 2020, and is a has been. He almost seems conservative compared to the current wing of progressive democrats.

I also agree with Edwin Edwards.

Jim Blanchard tried coming out of retirement in 2002, but lost to Jennifer Granholm in the Democratic Primary for governor. Other than that, I'd say John Engler might have had a shot at the Senate in 2014 if he weren't so old.

He is a conservative compared to them. Generation Dean is the most libertarian yet.

I know. I meant I could see him seeking a lower office, sort of like John Quincy Adams.
