I'm amazed how prevalent Indians are in the East coast, and even in the South.

It would really be cool to see a map for this, but in the 1970s.

According to the 1970 census, Japanese were the largest nationally.  More than 90% of Asians in the US were Japanese, Chinese, or Filipino.

Would've expected Chinese for Washington.

The distributions would likely be totally different since there are over 12 times as many Asian Americans today.

Japanese were almost the largest group in Hawaii.

True, Asians were only 0.8 % of the US population in 1970 and 4.8% in 2010.

Would've expected Chinese for Washington.

137,083 Filipinos vs. 113,144 Chinese, so still pretty close.  What I'm more surprised by, looking at the numbers, is that there are only like a thousand more Indians in the state than Japanese.  I know very few other people with Japanese ancestry, but tons of Indians.

I'm surprised Koreans aren't the winners anywhere.  Maybe they're just too evenly distributed.

I'm also surprised Indians > Vietnamese in Texas.

With the exception of Hmong and South Asian groups, California I presume has the largest number for each Asian group.

New York is first among Bangladeshi, Pakistani, and Malaysian
California is first for Hmong and Indian

I actually made a map of this by congressional district a few months ago:

Going by jimetex's map, the west is likely more dominated by Indians and Chinese than it was a few years ago.

These are the largest concentrations by congressional district. The percentage classification is based on 700,000 persons in CD.

50%

Total   California-17 369,707 (Fremont-Newark to Sunnyvale-Cupertino)

20%+

Chinese, except Taiwanese California-27 162,744 (Pasadena-Alhambra-Monterey Park)

15%+

Japanese Hawaii-1 125,941 (Honolulu)
Filipino Hawaii-1 114,413 (Honolulu)
Asian Indian California-17 112,659 (Fremont-Newark to Sunnyvale-Cupertino)

10%+

Vietnamese California-19 79,520 (San Jose and points south)

5%+

Korean California-34 57,927 (Central Los Angeles, including Koreatown)
Hmong Minnesota-4 38,817 (St. Paul)

2%+

Other Asian Hawaii-1 30,817 (Honolulu)
Cambodian California-47 16,304 (Long Beach-Westminster-Cypress)
Bangladeshi New York-14 14,119 (Northern Queens-Southeastern Bronx)

1%+

Pakistani Virginia-11 10,671 (Herndon-Reston-Vienna-Fairfax-Woodbury)
Laotian California-6 9,709 (Sacramento)
Taiwanese California-39 7,671 (Buena Park-La Habra-Brea-Yorba Linda-Hacienda Heights-Rowland Heights-Walnut; I'd guess in the southern part based on there being more total population)

<1%

Thai California-29 4,111 (Eastern San Fernando Valley)
Indonesian California-31 3,232 (San Bernardino-Redlands-Rancho Cucamonga)
Other Asian, not specified Virginia-8 2,304 (Arlington, Alexandria, eastern Fairfax)
Sri Lankan California-30 1,359 (Western San Fernando Valley)
Malaysian New York-6 922 (Central Queens)

I'm guessing that the Other Asian for Hawaii-1 are mainly those who gave multiple Asian responses.

MULTIPLE ASIAN RESPONSES
BHUTANESE
BURMESE
OKINAWAN
MONGOLIAN
INDO-CHINESE
IWO JIMAN
MALDIVIAN

Outside the Houston area, Indians are more numerous. Especially around Dallas and Austin to a lesser extent.
