Yes, the dead should be allowed to die. I can't think of anything worse then being kept "alive" when brain-dead. There is just no dignity in it at all.

She wasn't brain dead.   If she were, she'd need a lot more than a feeding tube.

Well what the hell was she then, exactly?

No (D), the issue was much more complicated.

The family wanted the tube removed are you going against their wishes?

Not entire family, there was a conflict between her husband, who wanted the tube removed, and her parents, who were against this.

I would've let her go, but I never understood why the government had to step in.  I get that her family was divided on the issue, but shouldn't they and the medical staff have worked it out?

No. For one thing, we don't convict people of felonies without the unanimous consent of interested parties, the jury. The family was divided about what to do and people are willing to allow a hospital to starve a woman to death.

I don't understand why those who support suicide for the sick would ever want to be associated with the removal of a feeding tube. This wasn't a case of 'painless' euthanasia like they typically defend. This is starving a woman to death.

I'm not quite sure when people think Terri lost her right to be alive, that's a view I would like to see answered by everyone voting in the affirmative.

No, and I'd say the same even if she had in fact been brain dead.

This too. It took her thirteen days to die.

Wow the results of this thread are depressing...who would want to stay a vegetable and put themselves through that? This was decided a decade ago time for people to get over it.

What was pathetic that was that 47 of the 100 House Democrats who were present voted for a very unpopular right-wing bill in this case. Congressional Democrats really have no clue. 82% of Americans said that Congress shouldn't have intervened.

The husband wanted it removed because he wouldn't divorce her, to be clear.

No. I only favor removing a feeding tube if the individual specifically grants permission to do so through a living will.
