Her Cerebral Cortex had been utterly destroyed and the rest of the brain showed extensive damage. Her body may have been alive, but Schiavo herself had been dead for years by the time they pulled the tube.

It's a private matter between the family and the doctors. The fact that the public and politicians got involved was absurd.

Having said that, situations like this definitely make me want to fill out an Advanced Health Directive ASAP.
