Using the Shahada to demonstrate Arabic calligraphy is about as boneheaded as using a crucifixion of Jesus to demonstrate portraiture. Doesn't excuse the overreaction, but there certainly were grounds for a reaction.

As lot of stupid here.

The school shouldn't have been shut down.
The parents should have been calmer.
The teacher and the text should have gone with a generic phrase such as "the dwellers of the garden are they that are the achievers" rather than "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”

I see that a number of people have already made the basic point I came here to make but yes, just imagine how liberals/secularists would have lost it if a public school teacher had done something equivalent in a lesson about Christianity. That being said, the district handled the situation very poorly, and something that should have been a non-issue got blown out of proportion because of the recent anti-Muslim hysteria.
