Overdue. It should have been done in 2004 when the Pentagon came up with the plan.

I supported it because I was 11 and Grandma told me it was good. I now think it just prolonged the war. It would have been better for an Iranian intervention in ~2009 when/if ISIL takes over. Let them handle it.

Completely stupid, like 99% of interventions conducted by this country.

I thought it was an HS because I was (read: my parents were) against the war in Iraq. But yeah, we were all 15 once... Didn't know anything about American politics then. Now I think it was a noble attempt/FS, but wars without good strategies seldom end well. Neoconservatism's love of democracy was the problem.

While the Iraq Invasion was a huge blunder  , once the US broke Iraq it had to fix it so the surge was a FS move

The fixing it didn't really turn out did it?

A lot of people on this forum are far younger than I expected.

As for me, I'm undecided, but lean FS in hindsight, because as I understand, it was doing well at tackling the insurgency, even if voters weren't willing to sustain it.

In terms of reducing the loss of American service members it certainly did. It paved the way for the withdrawal by 2011.

Regardless of my opposition to the initial invasion, I supported the surge then, and I still support it in retrospect.  It changed the tide of the war.

Yeah because we left.

I think invading Iraq in the first place was a mistake, but leaving when we did was just as catastrophic of an error.

So how long should we have stayed? A few more years? A decade? A hundred years like Mccain suggested? No it did not matter how long we stayed there it was going to be choas as soon as we left.

If America never funded the Libyan, and  Syrian rebels Iraq and Syria would still be stable

Well it's moot isn't it? The Iraqi government wanted the US out ASAP, Obama didn't want to be faced with an increasingly moody and belligerent Malaki (not to mention the Iraqi populace). There was really nothing to be done at that point.

Yeah I suppose you're right.

It's such a pity the Shia had to be such dicks about having the majority. Biden's partition plan makes more and more sense in retrospect I say.

Although I think the war was generally a mistake, the surge proved to be a success.  A good decision in hindsight.
