Create some sort of alternate timeline history thing, John McCain is still nominated but what in God's name happened to him.

McCain has a huge sex scandal. Recession becomes a Depression. RNC + Palin are utmost failures. Obama picks either Sebulius or another moderate southerner.

First Mistake: John McCain picks Joe Lieberman as his running-mate. In response, Obama names Evan Bayh as his running-mate for an experienced but young man. Obama sweeps the debates(51-45, 48-45, 54-44) and Bayh crushes Lieberman(56-41).

John McCain makes a serious gaffe on October 24. He says Obama is "about to be the last man like him to become unemployed." Racial undertones give this move widespread coverage, and McCain refuses to apologize. He also made a gaffe about "non-criminal rape" at the debate about social issues, specifically abortion.

I don't think MS and TX flip in any scenario.

Maybe a victorious Governor Harold Ford, Jr./Jim Webb? The Democratic Governor runs for Senate, and Ford runs for Governor instead?

McCain suffers a major health setback right before the election (stroke/heart attack) and the possibility of President Palin turns many off.

This could happen if Bush started campaigning with him or if he was found having an affair with Palin.
