Arlington County (as well as Alexandria) is regarded as the ugly duckling of Virginia, typically voting Democratic in every election since 1984.

here are the 2004 results for Arlington County:

Kerry/Edwards -67.6%
Bush/Cheney -31.3%

and for Virginia as a whole:

Bush/Cheney 53.8%
Kerry/Edwards 45.48%

2004:
Kerry - 56.3% (County); 52.9% (State)
Bush - 42.8% (County); 46.2% (State)

So my county (Middlesex) is just slightly more Democratic than NJ.

South Carolina
George W. Bush - 58%
John F. Kerry - 41%

Charleston County, South Carolina
George W. Bush - 52% (70,297 votes)
John F. Kerry - 47% (63,758 votes)

Low turn out may have been a problem among the county's black population (about 1/3 of the population in the county).  Charleston also has quite a progressive mayor, but he's been in office for decades so I suppose it's a tradition to vote for him even when you vote for Bush in the general election.

Where's the "they're almost exactly the same" option. That pretty much describes Henrico's percentage as compared to Virginia's percentage

In 2000, it was more Democratic. In 2004, it was more Republican.

Yet your country actually became more Democratic, right?

Nope, actually.

The 2004 results were 50.50% Kerry, 48.12% Bush. The state was 53.16% Kerry, 46.65% Bush.

The 2000 results were 51.41% Gore, 44.04% Bush. The state was 50.13% Gore, 44.56% Bush.

Option 2, (the difference mainly due to 9/11), usually only a few points more GOP than the state as a whole (because of NYC), overall  a fairly Democratic county

Westchester Co. NY

More Republican than the state since the Civil War.

More Democratic than the country since 1984.

Now it's only marginally (fractions of a percentage point) more Republican than the state as a whole.

(2004 Results:
Westchester: K 58.1 B 40.3
New York: K 58.4 B 40.1)

Berkshire Co. MA

More Democratic than the Country: Since Time (well, the data) Began.

More Democratic than the state: 1976-1980, 1988-

(2004 Results:
Berkshire: K 73.1 B 25.7
Massachusetts: K 61.94 B 36.78)

Fifteen years ago, Campbell used to be one of the worst counties in Kentucky. Now most of the rest of the state is pretty bad now too, except in big cities and mining areas.
