The 1992 Democratic national convention is deadlocked between Bill Clinton and Jerry Brown. Finally, they nominate Florida Governor and former Senator Lawton Chiles for president. Does he win the general election?

Al Gore could have been the nominee for Vice President anyway, because he would balance the ticket in terms of age (Chiles was 62 in 1992, Gore 44). If Chiles were to become president and reelected in 1996, Gore would have been the incumbent president in 2000, since Chiles actually died in December 1998.

This would also change the famous 1994 FL gubernatorial contest, which Jeb narrowly lost. Could he have beaten Buddy McKay (his 1998 opponent), who would have been the incumbent governor in the event of a Chiles presidency.

Bush had a 40% approval rating, so he loses regardless.
