So apparently Alaska once had a thriving Alaskan independence movement and party. They were and remain right wing libertarians and are fairly interesting. How did this happen where a third party like this won a major race and what happened to Alaskan independence and this party?

It helps when the third party candidate is a former governor of that same state. Hickel never actually supported Alaskan independence and reverted to being a Republican before his term ended.

Also, the Republican candidate in 1990 was pro-choice, and her Lt. Gov nominee defected to Hickel's ticket as his Lt. Gov nominee.

Just a few years ago, Tennessee had Zach Wamp as a congressman, and he wanted Tennessee to secede from the United States because he thought the federal government was run by "liberals."

Now that makes sense if the nominee was openly prochoice. Thank you.

As a follow up question, if the AIP nominated any other candidate besides Hickel, would they have crashed and burned?
