I am NOT talking about names like "The Beatles", but rather ones that have no "the" in front of them and refer more to concepts instead of tangible objects or things. This seems to be a new trend in melodic hardcore band names. A few examples:

Movements
Perspectives
Sirens
Lighthouses
Acres
Oceans
Moments
Giants
Cartographs
Vitals
Harbours (They're American by the way, so the spelling is obviously intentionally trying to appear pretentious and "intellectual")
Conceptions
Gateways

I get the impression it's appear "artsy" in minimalist way. However their names can look weird on a shirt because it doesn't scream "BAND NAME".

Also has any metal band ever had such a name?

The names sound to me more apropos to the names of musical tracts that are more in the genre of New Age, George Winston, type music, or light classical pieces.

I guess I'm supposed to be offended in some way? Meh, whatever. It's better than being intentionally pretentious.

I like Chvrches and Stars. I suppose the biggest effect is to create a sense of abstraction, where the name doesn't refer directly to the members of the band. I think it fits best for groups with ethereal lyrics.

These names can be kind of cool when they refer to things that are sort of aesthetic and spooky but have tangible existence in the physical universe, but come across as toolish when they're just abstract concepts. CHVRCHES and Stars are perfect examples of the former.

Lighthouses works pretty well for that.

Also I forgot Pyramids, Satellites, Entitlements, Stairwells and Nails.

...Geez there's A LOT of these.

So a few more I've discovered since this thread:

Altars
Creations
Proportions
Surroundings
Atrocities
Battlefields
Fallacies

Based on this thread apparentely some non-scene bands do this. I'm surprised.

Someone should try booking a fest similar to Dude Fest with nothing but these.

You have heard of Ramones and Wings, I assume?  Both formed in the early 70s.

There is a bit of debate on whether Ramones' name has a 'the' in front of it.
