Are there exit poll data?

I guess it is strong D since 2000, like any other minorities. Even non-poor minorities, like Jews and Asians, are strong D.

I think most analysis pins it as somewhat Republican prior to 2000, and now almost monolithically Democratic. I believe there was an exit poll that showed Muslim voters going 85% for Obama. Muslim voters, of course, are most significantly concentrated in Michigan.

Muslims voted two-to-one for H.W. Bush in 1988 (Dukakis openly telling them he didn't care about their votes was clearly not well-received), but they voted for Clinton in 1992 and 1996. An early 2001 survey by MAPS (Muslims in the American Public Sphere) showed 46 percent of Muslims were Democrats while only 16 percent were Republicans. Irregardless, most voted Bush in 2000 because of social issues and a feeling that Clinton had been too pro-Israel at Camp David.

I can not find any pre-1988 data.

The Atlantic did a good piece on this recently: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/12/republicans-muslim-vote-george-w-bush-donald-trump/419481/

The gist of it is that since Bush2's early years, Republicans have lost virtually all of the Muslim vote. Obama's share of their vote, according to the article, was 89% in 2008. Based on the recent proposals and rhetoric from GOP candidates, they can probably expect to get even less support for now on.

The results for the city of Dearborn, MI are instructive since it is about 40% Muslim, by far the highest concentration in the US. It voted 52-44 for Bush in 2000, then swung to 59-40 Kerry in 2004, 65-33 Obama in 2008 and 67-32 Obama in 2012.

I wonder what it is about Obama that makes Muslims so attracted to him???

I didn't know about 2000. I though the muslims had a better view on Clinton, because he had a pro Bosnia and Kosovo and anti Serbya position in the Balkan War. The Republicans opposed to Clinton's policies to the region.

Let's not forget Gore chose the most pro-Israel congressman on Capitol Hill as a running mate, That probably didn't help in attracting Muslims.

Pre-War on Terror they were a GOP leaning demographic.  IIRC the Bush campaign actually courted them in 2000 too.  But now they are solidly Democrat.  It probably would've happened either way, but the War on Terror definitely pushed them hard into the Democrat camp.

Yeah, I was unaware. Not that it's a big deal or anything, I just find it interesting to see a Muslim that identifies as both a Republican and a libertarian. Tongue

I think the word you were looking for was "regardless". "Irregardless" is a stupid term that should actually mean the opposite of regardless.
