It's delayed the inevitable split in the Anglican Communion by at least three years. The only real questions are when the split comes, does the conservative majority remain united or does it splinter, and in either case, how much of conservative Anglicanism finds a home in the Anglican ordinates of the Catholic Church.

The Episcopalian Church in Scotland is probably a year away from splitting in part due to the gay issue but also the Columba Declaration of co-operation that's been announced between the Church of England and the presbyterian Church of Scotland.

Is the Scottish Episcopal Church that eager to split?  It doesn't appear that the Scottish church has done or is contemplating doing anything that would cause it to be kicked out before the American Church and I doubt that would happen before the next Lambeth Conference. Or is the SEC worried that Columba is intended to pave the way for the CoS to replace the SEC if the Communion decides to expel the ECUSA and like-minded bodies? (Tho why the CoS would want to join the AC is beyond me.)

How about the excommunicate Bishop Spong next?  That man is one of the biggest heretics I've ever seen.

Anyone who feels THIS strongly against gay marriage from a "Christian" perspective needs to get a life.

Churches splitting up over this? Seriously??

Given the inertia over African churches and bishops in the Communion who want gays to literally go away, yet the US church is sanctioned then yes, this is the future.

Well it wouldn't be a church splitting up but a rather strange International of churches that serves no useful purpose.

Anyway they did as they always do and fudged in the easiest direction: slap on the wrist for the people who will sullenly take it and therefore not storm off immediately, rather than for the people who would do just that (despite the fact that they don't even like the latter group). The belief that a compromise can always be found is the most Anglican and silly of beliefs.

But if one side actually finds strength in their conviction (as seems to be the case) in being slapped in the wrist, will they keep on slapping them expecting a different result?

They'll do whatever seems to cause the least amount of fuss, as always.

I'd tend to agree with you on that.
