Germany.  Visiting my sister there in about a month ... might try to track down some long-lost relatives while I'm there, too. Wink

Definitely UK for me. I have a couple friends over there and a couple more through a historical society I belong to. Culture, language, history would be a match for me. There would be like a million things for me to do.

Germany. Basically a more civilized version of the Netherlands. People are much more polite.

Never been to either, but if I had to choose where to live, the UK. I'm sure Germany's a very nice place, but I don't want to go through the trouble of learning an entire new language.

UK by a nose, and probably just because my German isn't good enough for full immersion. Aber München ist meine Lieblingsstadt in ganzen Welt! Both are fantastic countries I would love to live in for a time.

UK. I've been there several times and truly feel at home there. At one point, I was very nearly going to move to Scotland. Not to mention the fact that my favorite TV shows, band, and books are all British.

I have nothing against Germany, and I think it is definitely a beacon the free world can look to. But having never been there, and just not being as familiar with it, I have to go with the UK.

Draw.

England  can't compete with Germany, which itself can't compete with Scotland, and is about on par with Wales.

...no opinion regarding Northern Ireland.

Both are beautiful countries. I love their history (maybe UK a little more on this count), culture (probably German being more exciting to me), languages and landscapes. Both are such diverse lands with so many different types of people and culture across. This is simply impossible to judge. Two very different, but wonderful, places.

As a person who regularly has to put up with Germans, it would be the UK even if it weren't for the fact that all of Great Britain is probably the best place in the universe.

Rarely been an answer that easy.

Obviously Germany because I stayed there for a while during my study.

But London was also great when I went there for a trip.

I suppose you as a Dutch have had your experiences with Germans as well? I'm just not at all a fan of the whole "Malle/Ballerman/Hüttengaudi-Après-Ski" (I hope you can understand that) attitude that they all seem to develop once they cross the border and invade the ski resorts every winter. I don't have anything against Germans in principle, just as I don't have anything against any people in principle, but I can't stand the behaviour a whole lot of them put up when on winter holiday.

Germany the country is a great place, and when they are home I have the same opinion about them as about anyone else.

I have to admit though, you cheese-heads are not really much better Tongue

Yes, I understand what you mean and I understand your sentiment as well, seeing as I grew up in a place by the sea that gets invaded and occupied by Germans every single summer... Talking in German to everyone, of course, and automatically expecting Dutch people to speak German too... But my opinion of Germany and Germans is still very positive, and they are good for the local economy anyway. And the visitors from Amsterdam are even worse.

I have to admit though, you cheese-heads are not really much better Tongue
Cry
Many people who go skiing and après-skiing are trash though, so I understand what this opinion is based on Tongue I only went to Tirol once, as a child, and the owners of the Gasthof told my parents they were impressed by my politeness, so it wasn't me (A)

UK to live but with frequent visits to Germany.  Germany is a wonderful country but the UK feels more like home.
