the American or Soviet one? Either way, impressively botched for very little net gain. (Although the Soviets carried it out in a crueler manner, being Soviets)

Some people think it was justified, I think we're there too long. We should've left by now.

An impressively botched war, but at least it had a halfway decent justification, unlike the Iraq War.

Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but I tend to be of the view that both the Soviet and American wars were justified (though both were terribly botched).

Assuming you're referring to the early 21st century conflict, absolutely necessary given the Taliban and al Qaeda are close allies, and even more so now that the Islamic State has made an appearance.  We don't have a choice but to win this and come out with a free and stable Afghan government.  We cannot afford to let Afghanistan sink into anarchy again like we did after the Soviets withdrew.

The Soviet one- Completely unjustified
