This would be a cornerstone of my healthcare bill if I were president.

This isn't an issue anymore, is it?

There are ways to get stem cells other than from fetal tissue. I support it.

The last time I remember anybody asking this question was on an online quiz made for the 2008 Presidential election. Anyway, obviously support.

This is a very misleading question.  Nobody opposes adult stem cell research; it's embryonic stem cell research that's controversial and raises ethical issues.  Personally, I support adult stem cell research but oppose embryonic research unless done on embryos that would otherwise be discarded.

This.

I just realized that there's a question on this issue that is rarely asked but needs to be answered: what is the major difference between embryonic and adult stem cell research, other than the source?

Embryonic stem cells can become any other cell, while adult stem cells are limited to the cells of their origin tissue. Also, adult stem cells are much rarer and harder to find.

Embryonic stem cells can become any other cell, while adult stem cells are limited to the cells of their origin tissue. Also, adult stem cells are much rarer and harder to find.

Adult stem cells can be "reprogrammed" to become other types of tissue now too ("Induced Pluripotency" is the term given to that). "Pluripotency" means the cell can become any type of adult tissue. No approved treatments currently exist for either type of pluripotent stem cells, primarily because it is difficult to fully control cell differentiation.

Not all stem cell usage requires pluripotency though, and there are numerous clinical treatments using adult stem cells of similar tissues without pluripotency.

Ideally, we would be able to take adult stem cells from a patient, induce pluripotency, and grow a new organ from the patient's own tissue.
