President Pat Buchanan's first term was.... controversial. He struck down liberal requests for a national healthcare system, made a constitutional amendment declaring abortion illegal. This alienated many moderate republicans, causing Romney, Gilmore, and Thompson to challenge him. Of course, it failed but Gilmore and Romney took a couple states. The democrats had no problem finding anyone to run, and the American Hawks were in a 2004 re-dux, choosing between 2004 VP Nominee Duncan Hunter or 1996 VP Nominee Lindsey Graham. In the end, after a fierce battle, John Edwards won the democratic nomination. Representative Tammy Baldwin withdrew 3 days before the convention though she only won 3 states. Jack Carter withdrew in late May. Edwards chose Evan Bayh as his running mate. Lindsey Graham won the American Hawk nomination and chose former mayor Rudy Giuliani as his running mate. Vice President Johnson declined to run for VP again (most likely due to policy disagreements), but stated he would support Buchanan. Governor Sarah Palin was selected as his running mate days before the convention.

My God... Buchanan has been absolutely dominated, if Edwards's lead continues, it shall be one of the greatest landslides ever...

Senator John Edwards/Senator Evan Bayh: 450 Electoral Votes 50.0%
President Pat Buchanan/Governor Sarah Palin: 79 Electoral Votes 26.9%
Representative Lindsey Graham/Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani: 9 Electoral Votes 23.1%

President Pat Buchanan was crushed in his bid for re-election, America was tired of republicans, no matter how "good" they were. Edwards promised change, unlike the aging failed Buchanan. Edwards promised abortion to be re-legalized, a more sound foreign policy, lower taxes, and took several Graham and Buchanan voters. Buchanan ditched Johnson for Palin and paid the price, and the American Hawk Party would dissolve in late 2009, after their midterm prospects looked grim, again. In the debates, Edwards dominated, same with Graham with Buchanan faltering, the greatest landslide in modern political history.

How did Buchanan win NE without carrying any Congressional districts?

If you figure that the three districts have equal numbers of voters:

District 1: 37% Edwards, 33% Buchanan, 30% Graham

District 2: 37% Edwards, 33% Buchanan, 30% Graham

District 3: 37% Graham, 36% Buchanan, 27% Edwards

Total: 34% Buchanan, 33.67% Edwards, 32.33% Graham

Not sure that the shades on that map line up with the hypothetical, but it's possible.

According to the map, Edwards won D1 with ~50% and D2 with ~40%, while Graham carried D3 with ~30%. I'm pretty sure it's mathematically impossible (or at least highly unlikely) that Buchanan would win statewide with those numbers.

District 1: 50% D   49% R   1% I
District 2: 40% D   39% R   21% I
District 3: 33% D   33% R   34% I
Nebraska: 41% D   40% R   19% I
