This. I'd go with Goldwater or McGovern in all reality. Goldwater came earlier than the time of his conservatism and McGovern came later than the time of his liberalism.

How are we defining radical?  By number of supporters?  There were tons of "Radical" Republicans in the 1860s and 1870s...
