I had had a couple of other dogs before, ex-wife took one, had to get rid of another one in a move, but this is the first dog that I've raised from pup to death.  It's going to suck.  Called to make the appointment, holding back tears the entire time, then started balling as soon as I hung up.  She's been a good girl, yes she has, whose a good girl? Maxey is.  Was never very good at retrieving despite being one, but she loved the water.  She was always good for a bark if someone knocked at the door.  And not no sissy bark either, the Rot came out of her when it was time to protect her own.  She loved walks and treats...hell she was a dog, of course she liked walks and treats.  But she didn't like popcorn, the only dog I've met that didn't.  Well here is the old girl

My heart breaks for you. I am getting really close to losing my 15 year old dog. I was told that he was likely to have to be put down a few months ago and coming to grips with losing him was the worst feeling in the world. I am so thankful that I am getting some extra time with him. You can always get another dog, but you cannot replace how that dog impacted your life. They really are so special. My condolences.

Really sad. Putting a pet to sleep is never fun.

It did go well.  I think I got all cried out in anticipation of the.....thing, I didn't have all that many tears left when it happened.  It makes it easier to have a couple of dogs to come home to, and the boy went with me, so that helped a lot too.  Thank you everybody for the kind words.

Today is the day of reckoning in my home.... My little guy Teddy who is 16 has to be put down. My mom who is a vet said she hasn't seen an x ray of a dog with so much cancer since vet school. It's almost like he had nine lives for living so long. I can't remember time before him, and there is going to be a big void in my family without him. i hope I can be strong to get through the goodbye.

I know what it's like to lose a dog that you love and that is an important part of your life.  A few years ago, my dog of 13 years died.  We never put her down; she just went naturally, going under the back porch.  We'd had her since I was in about kindergarten, so it was very hard to see her go.  I don't think it's an exaggeration to say I was heartbroken.  So yes, losing a much-loved pet sucks big time--as much as losing a family member, because they ARE part of your family.

The dog I always remember us having growing up, a female German sheppard mix namd Kenya was put down in 2003. We had her at least 8 years, but she was not a puppy when we go her.

Soon afterwards, we got a white lab mix named Christie as a puppy. She got really sick in 2010 into early 2011 but recovered. She was really bad in May 2011 and my Mom literally had her in the car to go and put her down but decided at the last minute to give her another chance. She recovered, but then got sick again in August and died while my Mom was at work. We had no other cars and thus no way to take her anywhere.

Putting down my first pet was the hardest thing I ever did. You don't realise how much they impact your life until they're lying their struggling to breathe and it's painful but deep down their pain is not worth your joy. You are making and incredibly brave decision that deep down you know will be the best for her. It's hard to do, you will cry, you will be in pain but like a human if you care that much, you will never forget them. Pets are the best, they're always there for you and always willing to love you - cherish however long you have left, be sad but also be happy you had your pet in your life.

It was a tough day. He wasn't a perfect dog, but he had a huge impact on everyone in my family. It will be tough with him gone.
