A New America Series - 1992 General Election

Many expected a strong third party challenge when the Democrats nominated the largely pro-business Senator Joe Biden. But Biden came out of the convention with a firey, populist speech and a running mate who complimented that vision: New York City Mayor Mario Cuomo. Cuomo had often opposed the more conservative Ed Koch, and gained popularity in the grassroots for his strongly liberal stands on the issues. Biden's platform includes middle class tax cuts, healthcare reform that involves more universal coverage, lowering the federal budget deficit, and securing American jobs.

President Kemp's tough primary challenge has left him in a tough spot against Biden, but Kemp is campaigning on his own record of accomplishment on lowering American's taxes, being tough on foreign policy, advocating for a more market-based healthcare reform, and completing the second half of his platform and reducing the size of government. He's also targeting a "Do Nothing Democrat Congress" for the failings of his administration.

2 Days to vote.

A very unenthusiastic vote for Kemp/Lewis.

A New America Series - 1992 General Election

Despite Senator Biden's strongly populist DNC speech, he did not manage to turn out labor and other fair trade forces in strong enough numbers. President Kemp, on the other hand, made a reach for African American voters, pledging to do more than the Democrats on poverty. The message had some level of resonance, as he managed to make significant gains in Michigan and New York (that would be an issue for Cuomo, as conditions and unemployment in New York City are poor). And while Biden had a strong and eager first debate, the second town hall debate showed Kemp's empathetic skills, while Senator Biden appeared scripted, a strange reverse of role for the two. The economy was beginning to recover as well, and despite a strong campaign from the Democrats there never seemed to be a sealing of the deal so to speak: and not much reason given to why a Democratic administration would be much better. Kemp would go on to win a second term by a solid margin.

President Jack Kemp (R-NY)/Vice President Gary Lewis (R-KS) - 53.8%, 386 EV's
Senator Joe Biden (D-DE)/Mayor Mario Cuomo (D-NY) - 46.2%, 152 EV's
