Nominate one or two, I'll do a couple of rounds of polls if there is interest.

What musical artists/bands will still be talked about, listened to and remembered at the beginning of the next century?  I'll toss in the obvious top handful so nobody has to waste their pick(s) on the Beatles or Elvis.

Pre-nominated list:
Beatles
Elvis
Robert Johnson
Michael Jackson
Bob Dylan

My picks are:
The Who
The Ramones

(and man this is tough....I sat here thinking about whether to include Robert Zimmerman in the pre-nom list or not for 5 minutes.)

Oh, stop it. I've never even heard of the latter band.

And I've never heard of Robert Johnson and the only reason I knew about that David Bowie guy everyone was talking about a few weeks ago is he once appeared on a Family Guy episode.

Jawbreaker is probably the most influential "post-punk indie melodic scenecore" band of the 90s.

Of course Dylan will be remembered in 100 years. I'd imagine The Rolling Stones would also be on that list, as would the Grateful Dead (not necessarily for their music as much as their impact on the jam band revival that is underway).

I imagine the long list of overexposed bands from the 60's and 70's will die off once the Boomers do.  A few will live on in the public consciousness (like the Beatles) but most are boring and survive on the radio due solely to the structural strength of that generation.  I can see Millennials becoming the same way with our crap, but in 85 years we'll all be long dead too.

Think about people we remember today that were around in 1931. Here's a small sample:
-Bartok
-Duke Ellington
-Bing Crosby
Some of you might not be familiar with Bartok, because you haven't wrangled with his "Hungarian Pictures" and it's crazy time signatures/aren't band nerds. There aren't a whole lot that people remember by name, although there are a lot I'm not listing here.

The point is, only the most impactful of the impactful will be remembered later.

Hmmm...20th century? The only music I really listened to in that century was from Barney the Dinosaur or similar sources, so it's hard for me to judge.

If we're picking two, I suppose I'll go...Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur.

Also, I can just picture 99-year-old Darthebearnc bumping this thread 85 years from now and laughing--before playing his Kanye [whatever music technology they have in 2100--I was about to say CD but I suppose even that's kind of out of date now, what with MP3s and such].

Honestly I have a hard time imagine which musicians will be remembered at such a future date. It really depend what genres of music becomes embraced by the future cultural intelligensia. My guess are that musicians who are icons like the Beatles and Elvis have a good chance of being remembered.

Does Justin Bieber have a shot at being remembered? Everyone keeps talking about him.

If film composition counts, I could see John Williams managing this fame based on his Star Wars work alone.

None, just as hardly any artists from 85 years ago are remembered now.  Heck, few artists from 50-60 years ago are remembered now.

The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson.

For currently active artists, Eminem.

As far as artists of this decade, I think Adele has the best chances and I doubt she'll even be remembered 60 years from now.

Maroon V will be remembered for the next few decades.

Come on man, there are people mentioned in this thread that are from 85 years ago, and 50 years ago was 1966, are you telling me few people today remember artists from 1966?  Are you kidding me?  I can name dozens without trying and I'm not even a "music" guy.

is your username ironic?
