A-will definitely run, has high chance at nomination
B-name to watch out for

Kay Bailey Hutchinson C *
Lisa Murkowski D
Debbie Stabenow D *
Mary Landrieu C
Barbara Mikulski D
Maria Cantwell C *
Patty Murray D
Olympia Snowe B *
Blanche Lincoln B

Also worth mentioning: Condoleezza Rice, I give her a D.

Don't post that on DKos. They'll be mad about the Boxer 'D'.

I might actually support the Dem ticket if she's the VP so we can get her out of here!  I would just fear the assasin in that case.

Her VP would take over.

What are her re-election chances, anyway?

I would say about 75% chance.  Most of the big name Republicans have dropped out and her poll numbers remain high for some reason.  I still think it will be closer than expected but barring a misstep I don't see her losing.

I'll give her one thing she is a skilled politician.

If she wins, she takes McCain's seat in 2010. He's got to retire by then.

At least he'll have a more conservative replacement.

If he wins the White House in 2008, which is very much in doubt, the governor will nevertheless appoint a Democrat that position, who will then be an incumbent in 2010, and probably win. So it looks like either way, 2006 will decide who gets Goldwater's old seat.

lol, I don't know about that.  Despite her image in the media, she's pretty left-winged.  We'll just say her and McCain share nearby property on the political spectrum Smiley

Hopefully by 2010 there will be some Napolitano fatigue and Reps Hayworth or Flake keep that seat in Republican hands.  If somehow McCain is elected president she'll probably appoint state party chair Jim Pederson to the seat.  He's eyeing a challenge to Sen Kyl (no way).  Honestly, I'm not sure where AZ law stands on special elections for a vacated seat.  Maybe Carl knows.
